Landscape Design

“I see landscape design as sculptural painting. My “big brush” painting style and tendency helps me to convey a deeper essence of form through simplification. My landscape design follows this style I have developed as a painter over many years: my intention always is to try to create shapes and rhythms in the landscape to convey a sense of the natural world, but with an artistic sensibility. A row of trees march up the California hillside on canvas. Bass notes, staccato rhythm. Accents. A bird – a messenger from above? Similarly, in a garden. A backdrop of dark green foliage highlights the pop of a yellow flower and adds dynamic movement and drama to a garden. I prefer a simple palette of plants in the way I use a limited palette for my paintings and in so doing plants massed together create unity in the garden and overall shapes and colors.”
